AITECE
sends suitable candidates to teach English or other subjects to third-level
students in China. Through interaction with these teachers students’ confidence
is increased, their language proficiency is improved while they gain a
greater understanding of cross-cultural issues.
As a consequence, when the students return to their own communities and
enter the world of work they are less daunted by the prospect of conversing
and doing business in English more aware of the similarities and differences
which exist between cultures more aware of issues which may help them
to influence decision-making in their local communities.
Teaching may not be the only feature of your time in China. What seems
to emerge is a wonderful dialogue between the teacher and their students
on beliefs, culture, values etc. The returned teachers speak a lot about
this. A teacher’s sense of purpose, enthusiasm and genuine concern awaken
a responsive sense of hope and expectation to those encountered.
